Even though avocado is thought to be originally from Mexico, in Ecuador we find a great diversity of varieties of local avocados known as "criollas".
Little effort has been made to catalog these varieties.
This project seeks to identify and conserve the local varieties of avocado of the Ecuadorian Northern Andes. We are collaborating with INIAP (National Institute for Agricultural Research) to determine their aptitude to improve commercial varieties.
This project could contribute to improve the quality of the plants adapted to our microclimates that are produced in Ecuador. They could also open a world of possibilities for investigation and new avocado uses.
